family therapy, and individual therapy.

Taking the First Step
Licensed Marriage and Family TherapistReaching out for help is the first and hardest step. My view is that within every problem there is an opportunity for personal growth so please know you've reached out to grow. Making the decision to engage in therapy often takes courage. Sometimes it means having to face your fears. Therapy is meant to be a different experience than one you might encounter outside the therapy room. Therapy is meant to help you understand yourself and others so that your life might be better. Whether you are coming for individual or relationship counseling or whether you are in severe emotional crisis and need some advice about life, I offer you a compassionate and knowledgeable approach to personal problems and the environment you need to work on them.

Background

Larry HolmanI've been a practicing psychotherapist since 1990. I received my Masters degree in counseling psychology from the University of Alaska Anchorage in 1990. I became licensed as a marriage and family therapist in 1994 when licensure was first available in the state of Alaska. Prior to becoming a marriage and family therapist I had other careers. I was the aquatics director for Anchorage for three years. I then became a building contractor, primarily a carpenter for the next 10 years. My experience in other occupations has given me the advantage of a well-rounded work experience. This gives me insight, particularly into the problems that workingmen have in relationships. I've been happily married for 44 years. My wife and I raised two children. I'm now enjoying the benefits of being a grandfather, taking care of my young grandson one day a week.

I came to Alaska in 1967 at the age of 19. I moved up from Southern California as a young man seeking adventure. I've lived mostly in Anchorage. My wife and I moved to Homer Alaska and lived there for 10 years. During that period of time I was a building contractor. We moved our family back to Anchorage so that I could go back to school and complete my master's degree in counseling. I spent two years at Charter North Hospital in the adolescent unit and working with adults with addiction issues. I then worked at the Anchorage Center for Families. I counseled families and couples during the next two years. I started a part-time private practice while working at the Anchorage Center for Families and I've been in private practice ever since.

Alaska Marriage therapistI was very involved with the professional association for marriage and family therapists in Alaska (AKAMFT). I held positions of treasurer and president during my tenure. I've also been very involved in the Anchorage community for the past 10 years organizing a fund raising event for free colorectal screening. As a result of having colon cancer myself I started a biking event from Anchorage to Seward called the Ride For Life, Alaska. We raised over $700,000 in those 10 years, which went to primarily to provide screenings to people who could not afford them. I'm currently involved as a board member in the beginning stages of organizing a nonprofit to provide low-cost counseling for couples in Anchorage. The Couples Center will also provide education and training for new marriage and family therapist and for other experienced therapist who would like more advanced training working with couples. My work in these activities encompasses my philosophy about giving back to the community.
