COUPLES THERAPYcouples therapy, alaska

Most studies conclude that the quality of your relationships influences your “happiness” more than any other factor.  I’ve chosen to specialize in couples counseling for 15 years because of that knowledge.   More than half of my clients I currently see as couples.

Remember, your happiness is tied very closely to the degree that your relationship is successful.

Many couples come in for couples counseling because the main issues in their life revolve around their children.  Children are the joy of our lives but they often are the focus of family problems that cause lots of stress.  I work with children individually as young as 13 years but in the context of families I work with all ages.  I’ve personally experienced some of the problems that families bring to me raising my own family.  And professionally I’ve seen most other problems that come up in families.  Let me guide you through a “family meeting” to show you how to create a willingness among family members to be a part of the solution and not just the “identified” patient.  I have many resources for parents to access that will help you raise healthy vibrant children.

Like most therapists I also see individuals in therapy, often in the context of a relational problem.  Sometimes it’s a married person whose spouse chooses not to attend.  Other times it might be a teen whose parents are worried about some behavior they are displaying.  Many problems can be tackled via individual counseling particularly problems created by some trauma that has occurred in your life.  I have practiced EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) since 1991, using it to help clients process old and new traumatic experiences.    EMDR is a type of psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences.

I do offer and schedule several types of group therapy.  One popular group therapy is Couple’s Group.  This is for committed couples to meet weekly for 8 to 10 weeks to learn relationship skills and share experiences with other men and women in similar situations.  I will be offering a Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) class in the future.  MBSR is based on the work of Jon Kabot Zinn.  We are also planning on offering a Men’s Group centered on relationships.
